La RomanaLa Romana although is inland and about 400m above sea level is also well known for its mild climate & the entire region enjoys sunshine for in excess of 320 days per year. The sun is at its hottest during the summer months, with temperatures rarely falling below 30°C (86°F). Winters are typically very mild with averages hovering around 18°C (64°F). The winter of 2004/05 was a tad cooler though! La Romana - inland Spain at it's best!Driving towards La Romana with the windows down, a sense of peace drops over the mountain tops and envelops you. Feeling the warmth of the wind combined with the scent of grapes from the lush vineyards and vast almond and olive groves and somehow you feel settled. Here nestled in a valley created by the sierra del Reclot mountains, lies La Romana: Traditional welcoming and truly beautiful. La Romana translates simply as "The Roman One" and is a surprisingly well equipped village consisting of amenities such as two small Spanish and one English supermarket, six bars, three backers, butchers and set in a beautiful wooded parkland with seating, play area for the children and gravelled walkways is a communal swimming pool. This is a very social village with both Spanish and foreign residents interacting on a daily basis; enjoying tapas and the good weather outside one of the many Spanish bars. Home to around 2000 inhabitants, La Romana is becoming increasingly popular with foreigners looking for somewhere traditionally Spanish, yet open to progression. Integration between the nationalities is seen well within the primary school, where children from non speaking Spanish countries are welcomed and encouraged. The older generation of Spanish residents are also keen to pick up English words and are very accommodating to those in the process of learning Spanish. The casa de Cultura In La Romana provides free Spanish and English lessons to help this multi racial socialising, making the transition into rural Spain so much easer for the whole family. The Mayor of La Romana Manuel Hernández Riquelme has been kind enough to offer the following words: to a local magazine “This magazine has given me a grand opportunity to communicate with the European community and it is with great pleasure that I do so. The Mayor's office together with the town council of European residents, aim to establish a strong relationship with our foreign residents. We urge them to inform us of any concerns they may have; their plans for the future and their dreams, so that we can help make this a reality. La Romana, as you may know is a quiet and humble village and yet has great possibilities to prosper, whilst maintaining its identity. Its inhabitants are friendly and very committed to everything that affects their area. They understand the need for successful integration and acceptance of other cultures. This is extremely important as nowadays La Romana has a large number or permanent residents from other countries. In the school you can see children of different nationalities integrating totally and relating to one another as they learn. This is something as adults we should take as an example. We at the town hall, urge our residents to make an effort within the community and to participate in the activates that we plan. My main hope is that we will achieve perfect integration, without language being a barrier. For my part I am always open to any suggestion to aid this further” Un saludo a todos La Romana FiestasLike other Spanish towns La Romana has numerous fiestas, The list below will be updated shortly, If you have any comments or fiesta dates to add to this page please send them to us for inclusion.
