Fiestas - Festivals

As per any Spanish town Alicante has a large selection of festivals. I have listed below a small selection with a brief history. If you would like to add any new fiestas or additional information that would be helpful to others please email me on info@find-villas-Spain.co.uk and I will be happy to add it to this page

April
In late April you have the "Moros y Christianos" (Moors & Christians) fiesta. This commemorates the expulsion of the Moors from Alicante in the 13th century. You will witness spectacular parades with the local towns people wearing their stunning costumes parading through the city streets.

June
The main event is the "Las Hogueras de San Juan" (Festival of Saint Juan) which lasts an entire week. During this week the transformation of Alicante is amazing. This fiesta again encompasses the traditional street parades but also transported around the city are huge wood & papier-mâché effigies sitting on the floats & dotted around the city centre. You need to allow a fair amount of time to wander around the city to examine each and every one of the effigies as the detail and workmanship is unbelievable. But never fear there is always a bar at hand with plenty of tapas to keep you going. The finale is the grand palmera (fireworks display) where all floats & effigies are burnt. This is a fantastic festival and well worth the time to go and have a look. As per all Spanish festivities make sure you have a siesta in the afternoon as the eating and drinking goes on until the early hours of the morning.

June/July
Moving swiftly on and having only just recovered, the end of June/beginning of July is the next event in Alicante. “The Feast of San Pedro” As per most if not all fiestas in Spain, this is a semi religious fiesta but mainly celebrating the summer solstice. Here you will have yet more fireworks and of course the compulsory dancing, eating and drinking.

September
September is more for the music enthusiast, with music from all around the world

November/December
Launched in 1984 the International Puppet Festival also known as the "Festitíteres" has become internationally renowned and is fun for all the family

Tabarca Island

If you are looking for a lovely day out and a small boat trip then a visit to the Island of Tabarca is situated just a 30 minute ferry ride from the harbour of Alicante. You are also able to pick up a ferry from Santa Pola. Santa Pola is a lovely place as well so you have a choice of departure places. You use one of the many glass bottom boats that depart every hour. The advantage of the glass bottomed boats are that once down on the observation deck you get to see the wondrous sea life, due to Tabarca being a protected Nature and Marine sanctuary since the 1980s the closer you get to Tabarca the more interesting it gets. Having sailed to this Island many times I can tell you the sea is normally very calm, cristal clear and well worth a swim.
It will not take you long to walk around this 2km long island which is dotted with lots of local restaurants, fishermen’s houses, a church and the fortress. There are no roads just peace and tranquillity.

Alicante Airport (El Altet) Information

Alicante International Airport (El Altet) is located 11km from the city in a town called El Altet on the main A7 motorway. The airport has just opened a second terminal so things can get a bit confusing with arrivals and departures but this is Spain so what do you expect !:o)
