AlicanteWE HAVE NO PROPERTIES HERE AT THE MOMENT BUT A GOOD PLACE TO VISIT FOR THAT TRIP OUT. Fiestas - FestivalsLike other Spanish towns Alicante has numerous fiestas, Some of its famous festivals are listed below some are large affairs and some more local. We will keep adding to this list and will produce a calendar so you can see what is coming up, or book your time over here to coincide with your favourite April In late April the "Moros y Christianos" (Moors & Christians) fiesta commemorates the expulsion of the Moors from Alicante in the 13th century. Literally hundreds of locals celebrate the festivity by way of donning often elaborate costumes & parading through the city streets. June The main event is the "Las Hogueras de San Juan" (Festival of Saint Juan) which lasts an entire week at the end of June. During this week Alicante is transformed. The focal point is again a street procession, but this time the stars are huge wood & papier-mâché effigies sitting atop the floats & scattered around the city centre. A good deal of humour & satire has gone into the design of these figures, only to be consumed by flames as the finale to the grand palmera (fireworks display) where all floats & monuments are burnt to cinders. This is a fun festival with lots of eating, drinking & dancing. Makeshift party enclosures (barracas) of varying sizes are erected. The larger ones are open to the general public (smaller enclosures often have memberships) with live music & other entertainment all free of charge. Be prepared to stay up late! June/July With hardly any time to recuperate, the end of June/beginning of July is host to the Feast of San Pedro. This is a semi religious fiesta with Christian undertones but essentially celebrating the summer solstice. This involves yet more fireworks, eating, drinking & dancing. September The second half of September sees the annual theatre festival "Alicante e Esena", closely followed by the Alicante International Contemporary Music Festival. This music festival started in 1985 promoting mainly Spanish music & musicians, but has since developed featuring music from all over Europe & the Americas. There are also several parallel events such as book & record fairs, photographic exhibitions & courses. November/December Around the end of November & beginning of December the International Puppet Festival comes to Alicante. Launched in 1984 this event, also known as the "Festitíteres" has acquired prestige due to its unique approach & international participation. With its programme aimed at both adult & family audiences, the many venues include both indoor & outdoor locales Tabarca IslandA great day out, the tranquil Island of Tabarca is situated just 30 minutes ferry ride out to sea from Santa Pola you are also able to pick up a ferry from Alicante, but as Santa Pola is a lovely place you can kill two birds with one stone by taking the ferry from the lovely town of Santa Pola. You use one of the many glass bottom boats that departs every hour around €6. The advantage of the glass bottomed boats are that once down on the observation deck you get to see the wondrous sea life, due to Tabarca being a protected Nature and Marine sanctuary since the 1980s the closer you get to Tabarca the more interesting it gets. Having sailed to this Island many times I can tell you the sea is normally very calm. Once you have arrived you must take a walk around the tiny island; It is just under 2 kilometres by 400 metres and it will give you time to see the Church some houses that were for the fishermen, some restaurants selling wonderful sea food, and the fortress. There are no cars, no noise, just peace and tranquillity. You have a choice of secluded beaches but unfortunately not normally to yourselves … well in the height of the season anyway secluded beaches, and go for snorkel in the transparent Mediterranean waters. Or simply relax with a glass of Sangria and a good book. In the past Tabarca was occupied by Pirates and during the 18th Century colonised by Genoese Prisoners. Italian surnames are still to be found in the churchyard as proof of this. Alicante Airport (El Altet) InformationAlicante International Airport (El Altet) is located 11km from the city itself. With easy access from the main A7 motorway, it is well signposted but you do need to concentrate when looking at the signs some can be misleading. With in excess of 7,000,000 passengers passing through the airport in 2002 El Altet is one of Southern Spain's busiest destinations. Many improvements have been made in recent years to the current terminals facilities, & the overall look of the place is relatively modern & spacious. Due to ever increasing demand a new runway is under construction. One of the largest carriers out of Alicante is Easy Jet. They are at the moment in negotiation to provide there own ground cover so this will remove the threat of strike action. Alicante – Water ParksThere are 3 water parks within reasonable driving distance of Alicante, the largest of which is near Benidorm to the North. Equally good fun are the Torrevieja & Quesada (Rojales) alternatives. Please see below for details: - Aquapolis Torrevieja Aqualandia Benidorm Aqua Park – Ciudad Quesada (Rojales)
